BALCO Produces First Metal from India's Largest Smelter, Enters Million Tonne Club

Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), a Vedanta Aluminium unit, produced the first metal from India's largest 525 kilo Ampere smelter at its Korba, Chhattisgarh plant. The 525 kA smelter surpasses the previous Indian benchmark of 378 kA and represents part of BALCO's one million tonne per annum expansion project. With the new 0.435 MTPA potline commissioning, BALCO's total aluminium production capacity reaches 1 MTPA, placing it in the global 'Million Tonne Club'. The company will contribute over 20% of India's total aluminium production. BALCO's expansion increases Vedanta Aluminium's capacity to 2.8 MTPA. The project involved collaboration with Larsen & Toubro, ABB, Siemens, and Guiyang Aluminium Magnesium Design & Research Institute.
