Company History

1981

  • Incorporated as Ambuja Cements Pvt. Ltd. on 20 October, promoted by GIIC and N.S. Sekhsaria associates.
  • Entered agreements with Krupp Polysius for plant equipment.

1983

  • Converted to public limited company on 19 March.
  • Name changed to Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd. on 19 May.
  • All initial shares subscribed by promoters.

1985

  • Received letter of intent for capacity expansion to 1.4 MTPA.
  • Issued equity shares with preferential allotments and public offer.
  • Commissioned initial cement plant.

1986

  • Commenced cement production.
  • Issued 20 lakh equity shares on 1:1 rights basis.

1988

  • Production declined to 802,301 tonnes due to rains and floods.

1989

  • Commissioned 12.6 MW diesel generating sets.

1990

  • Received approvals for 1 MTPA plant at Suli, Himachal Pradesh.

1991

  • Issued 10 lakh 17.5% NCDs on private placement.
  • Proposed equity shares, NCDs with warrants for expansion.

1992

  • Initiated bulk cement sea transportation; completed Kodinar and New Mumbai terminals.

1993

  • Gajambuja Cement unit produced first clinker in March.
  • Allotted rights shares and shares on warrants.

1994

  • Commissioned 1.5 MTPA plant in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
  • Acquired land at Sahranpur for grinding unit.
  • Ordered machinery for 1 MTPA plant at Ambujanagar.
  • Issued 1:1 bonus shares; allotted to IFC.

1995

  • Proposed additional cement mill at Himachal plant.
  • Allotted shares on FCCB, rights, and warrant conversion.

1996

  • Added ships Ambuja Keerti and Shakti to fleet.
  • Submitted Modi Cements revival proposal to IDBI.

  • Allotted 100 million 10% pref shares; redeemed 30 million 12.75% pref shares.
  • Kodinar plant commenced with enhanced capacity.

2003

2005

2006

  • Holcim acquired management control and raised stake above 50%.
  • Changed accounting year.

2007

  • Changed name from Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd to Ambuja Cements Ltd.

2008

  • Appointed Mr. Naresh Chandra as additional director.

2009

  • Launched Ambuja Knowledge Center operational in Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Kolkata.
  • Granted stock options under ESOS.

2010

  • Inaugurated 1.5 MTPA grinding unit at Dadri, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Inaugurated 1.5 MTPA grinding unit at Nalagarh, Himachal Pradesh.
  • Dadri Grinding Unit received ISO 9001, 14001, and OHSAS 18001 certifications.

2011

  • Celebrated 25 years of operation with silver jubilee.
  • Achieved water-positive status certified by Det Norske Veritas.
  • Acquired 85% equity in Dang Cement Industries Pvt. Ltd., Nepal.
  • Acquired 60% equity in Dirk India Pvt. Ltd.

2012
