Company History

1942

  • Set up small lead smelting pilot plant at Tundoo near Dhanbad, Bihar.

1944

  • Metal Corporation of India (MCI) formed; company assets transferred to MCI.

1945

  • Government of India surrendered Zawar mining rights to Mewar durbar; MCI obtained 2-year prospecting licence and mining lease in 1950.

1960

  • MCI obtained licence for 9,000 tpa lead and 540,000 oz silver production.

1966

  • Company incorporated on 10 January in Rajasthan as zinc and lead producer.

1990

  • Commissioned facilities for cobalt and indigenous lead-zinc ores production.
  • Developed in-house cobalt recovery technology with BARC.

1992

  • Allotted 188,00,000 shares to President of India.

1993

  • Sublicensed gold prospecting applications for Bhukia-Jagpura and Dungarpur to Rajasthan Government.

1994

  • Disinvested 40,37,31,900 shares to Mutual Funds and Financial Institutions.

1996

  • Entered MoU with BHP Minerals Australia for JV exploration in Rajasthan.
  • Entered MoU with Vigego Vietnam and La-Sarce France for Pac-Lang gold prospect in Vietnam.

1997

  • Entered multiple MoUs/JVs for exploration: BHP (Rajasthan), BRGM/VMC (Vietnam gold), Nuigini Mining (India gold), Pasminco (Ajmer), CSIR (nickel).
  • Decided to develop Sindesar Khurd Lead-Zinc-Silver deposit.
  • Closed Degana Tungsten Mine.
  • Signed MoU with Government of India and RSMML for power project.
  • Rampura-Agucha Mine awarded ISO 9002 certification.
  • Planned new 60-100 ktpa zinc smelter.

1998

  • CRISIL assigned P1+ rating to Rs 10-crore short-term deposit programme.
  • FIPB approved JV with BHP for base metals mining in Rajasthan.
  • Announced 100 MW captive power plant with RSMML.

1999

  • RCF, HZL and RSMML signed MoU for Rs 300-crore DAP project.
  • Commenced closure of loss-making units ahead of privatisation.

2002

  • Government disinvested 26% equity stake to Sterlite for Rs 4450 million with management control.
  • Implemented management changes with Sterlite and Government nominees.

2003

  • Vishakhapatnam Zinc Smelter received ISO 9000:2000 certification.
  • Raised $12 million ECBs for capacity expansion.
  • Appointed Aditya Narayan as Managing Director.

2004

  • Completed 35,000 tpa zinc debottlenecking at Chanderiya Smelter Complex.

2005

  • Inaugurated 170,000 tpa Zinc Smelter and 154 MW Captive Power Plant at Chanderiya.
  • Received Greentech Environment Excellence Silver Award.
  • Expanded Rampura Agucha Mine to 3.75 mtpa.

2006

  • Received Golden Peacock Award.
  • Commissioned 170,000 tpa Hydrometallurgical Zinc Smelter (Hydro I) at Chanderiya.
  • Commissioned 2x77 MW Captive Power Plant at Chanderiya.
  • Commissioned 50,000 tpa Ausmelt Lead Smelter at Chanderiya.

2007

  • Appointed Shri Sanjiv Kumar Mittal as Government Nominee Director.
  • Appointed Shri A K Singh as Government Nominee Director.
  • Sindesar Khurd Mine began production at 0.3 mtpa.
  • Commissioned 38.4 MW Wind Energy Farms at Gujarat.

2008

  • Commissioned 170,000 tpa Hydrometallurgical Zinc Smelter (Hydro II) at Chanderiya.
  • Commissioned 80 MW Captive Power Plant at Chanderiya.
  • Completed 5,000 tpa zinc debottlenecking at Debari Zinc Smelter.
  • Commissioned 50.4 MW Wind Energy Farms at Gujarat.

2009

  • Expanded Rampura Agucha Mine to 5.00 mtpa, total mining capacity 7.40 mtpa.
  • Completed 88,000 tpa zinc debottlenecking at Chanderiya and Debari Smelters, total metal capacity 754,000 tpa.
  • Commissioned 80 MW Captive Power Plant at Zawar Mines.
  • Commissioned 34.4 MW Wind Energy Farms, total wind capacity 123.2 MW.

2010

  • Expanded Rampura Agucha Mine to 6.00 mtpa, total mining capacity 8.40 mtpa.
  • Commissioned 210,000 tpa Hydrometallurgical Zinc Smelter at Rajpura Dariba, total Zinc and Lead capacity 964,000 tpa.

2011

  • Commissioned 1.50 mtpa concentrator at Sindesar Khurd Mine.
  • Commissioned 160 MW Captive Power Plant at Dariba Smelting Complex.
  • Added 48 MW wind power generation capacity.
  • Split share face value from Rs 10 to Rs 2.
  • Issued 1:1 bonus shares.

2012

  • Ramped up Sindesar Khurd mine to 2.0 mtpa.
  • Commissioned 100 ktpa Lead smelter at Dariba, total Lead capacity 185 ktpa.
  • Commissioned new Silver refinery, capacity 500 tpa.
  • Commissioned 102 MW wind power expansion, total 274 MW.
  • Commenced underground development at Rampura Agucha and Kayar mines.

2013

  • Board recommended Final Dividend.
  • Akhilesh Joshi awarded MEAI-Adheraj Baldota Memorial Gold Medal Award.

2014

  • Commissioned Sewage Treatment Plant at Udaipur.
  • Awarded Significant Achievement in HR Excellence by CII.

2015

  • Signed MoUs with Rajasthan Government along with Cairn India.
  • Installed refuge chambers in underground mines in Rajasthan.

2016

  • Board declared Special Golden Jubilee Dividend.
  • Received EC amendment to scale up production.

2017

  • Declared interim dividend.

  • Ranked 1st globally in Environment Category by DJSI World.

2019

  • Received CNBC-Awaaz Rajasthan Ratna Award.
