1928

  • Burmah Shell Oil Storage & Distribution Company of India incorporated in England for petroleum business in India.

1952

  • Burmahshell Refineries Limited incorporated on 3rd November.
  • Shell and Burmah Oil set up Burmah Shell Refineries for Mumbai refinery.

1955

  • Mahul, Chembur refinery in Mumbai commissioned in January.
  • Introduces LPG as cooking fuel and educates customers.

1976

  • Name changed to Bharat Refineries Limited on 12th February.
  • Operations of Burmah Shell in India nationalised; Refinery and Marketing Companies merged to form BPCL.

1977

  • Name changed to Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited on 1st August.

1979

  • Government of India acquires 100% equity of BSR and rights/liabilities of BSM per 1979 agreement.

1992

  • Commissions 50 retail outlets including 9 rural and 7 SKO/LDO dealerships; total outlets 4,090, LDO 928.
  • Government sells 20% shares to financial institutions and mutual funds; President holds 80%.

1993
