Company History
1884
- The Company started operating shipbuilding and repair workshops as an unincorporated entity.
1934
- The Company was incorporated under the name and style of Garden Reach Workshops Limited.
1957
- The word ‘Private’ was added to the name of the Company and the name became Garden Reach Workshops Private Limited.
1960
- The Company was acquired by the Government of India.
1961
- The word ‘Private’ was deleted from the name of the Company.
- The Company built the indigenous warship INS Ajay, which was the first Naval ship built in the country after India's independence.
1976
- The name of the Company was changed to Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited.
- The status of the Company was changed from ‘private limited company’ to ‘deemed public limited company’ under the provision of Section 43(1A) of the Companies Act, 1956.
1980
- The patrol vessel CGS Rajhans was built for Indian Coast Guard.
1981
- The survey vessel INS Sandhayak was delivered to Indian Navy.
1984
- The Company designed in-house and built the first of class landing ship tank (large).
1992
- The class ship of new design FPV, CGS Priyadarshini, was delivered to Indian Coast Guard.
1994
- The class P-16A guided missile frigate INS Brahmaputra was launched.
- The Company built a research vessel named Sagardhwani.
1997
- The Company designed and developed portable steel bridges for the first time in India.
2000
- The class fast attack craft was delivered to Indian Navy after extensive trials.
2006
- The Company was accorded the status of Mini Ratna - Category I.
2009
- The two WJ-FAC, INS Carnicobar and INS Chetlat, were delivered to Indian Navy.
2011
- The Company signed a contract for building CGS Barracuda, a multi-role offshore patrol vessel for National Coast Guard of Mauritius.
2014
- The class ASW Corvette, INS Kamorta, was delivered to Indian Navy.
2016
- The first of the follow-on WJ-FAC, INS Tarmugli, was delivered to the Indian Navy.
- The Company delivered one ship of the class new generation landing crafts to Indian Navy.
- The Company received Quality leadership award by Quality Circle Forum of India.
- The Company received Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar – 2nd prize for excellence in implementation of official language.
- The Company received Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar – 2nd prize for the magazine ‘Rajbhasha Jagriti’
2017
- The Company was converted into a public limited company pursuant to the shareholders resolution passed in the Annual General Meeting.
- A fresh certificate of incorporation was issued by the Registrar of Companies, West Bengal.
- The Company delivered two ships of the class new generation landing crafts to Indian Navy.
- The Company received Quality Leadership Award by Quality Circle Forum of India.
- The Company received ICC PSE Excellence Award in the category of Company of the Year.
- The Company received ICC PSE Excellence Award in the category of Corporate Governance.
- The Company received SCOPE Corporate Communication Excellence Award 2017 in the category of Brand Building through Inclusive Growth Initiatives.

2023
- The Company signed an MoU with Rolls Royce Solutions of Germany for production of Marine Engines under Make in India initiative.
2024
- The Company received a letter of Intent of Award for Contract for Design, development, construction, Integration of Equipment, Testing, certification from Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory.
- The Company received two letters of Acceptance of Award for Contract for Design, Build, Operation and Maintenance of Hybrid Electric Ferries from Government of West Bengal.
- The Company entered a Contract with the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority for the Procurement of 01 No. Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger.
